The Real Cost of a Canadian Winter on Your Locks

A key that's slightly worn, or one that's been bent from being carried in a tight pocket, is far more likely to snap off inside a cold, stiff lock than it would in a lock that's operating smoothly at room temperature. Forcing a stuck key, rather than stopping and troubleshooting, is the single most common way we see keys break off in the cylinder during winter months.
If a key ever feels like it's meeting resistance partway through turning, stop. Don't force it. A small amount of lubricant and a gentle back-and-forth motion resolves most sticking points without damage. Continued force usually ends with a locksmith visit to extract a broken key, which is avoidable in almost every case.
A Preventative Maintenance Plan That Actually Works
The homeowners who never call us for a winter lock emergency tend to follow a simple, low-effort routine:
- Lubricate all exterior locks with graphite or silicone lubricant every fall, before temperatures drop consistently below freezing.
- Wipe down lock faces periodically through the winter to remove road salt and grime buildup.
- Install keyhole covers on exposed exterior locks if they don't already have one.
- Avoid forcing a key that meets resistance, and address sticking immediately rather than waiting.
- Have locks inspected every year or two, especially on doors that are original to an older home.

Pouring hot water on a frozen lock, a common piece of advice you'll find online, often makes things worse by adding more moisture that refreezes almost immediately. If a lock is frozen, a proper lock de-icer or a small amount of direct heat from a hairdryer held at a safe distance is a better approach. If a key has already broken off, or the lock is grinding and you're not confident working on it yourself, that's the point to call a professional rather than risk turning a stuck lock into a locked-out household.
