- The strike plate — the small metal plate the deadbolt bolt seats into — is frequently attached with screws barely an inch long, sunk only into the door jamb's trim and not the structural framing behind it. A hard kick can tear it straight out.
- The door jamb itself often splits along the grain right where the strike plate sits, even when the lock and door are both intact and undamaged.
- The door frame can separate from the surrounding wall framing entirely in an older or lower-quality installation.
- Sliding patio doors are frequently lifted off their tracks rather than unlocked, which can bend the track or damage the frame without breaking the lock at all.
This is why a "new lock" alone often isn't enough repair. If the wood around the strike plate is compromised, the strongest deadbolt on the market won't hold against a second attempt.

- A reinforced or high-security strike plate with three- to four-inch screws that reach the structural stud behind the jamb, not just the trim.
- A door jamb reinforcement kit or steel U-channel, which spreads impact force across a much wider area of the frame instead of concentrating it at the strike plate.
- An ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt, rated for far higher impact and cycle testing than typical big-box hardware — Grade 1 hardware is built for commercial-level abuse and holds up considerably better against forced entry than the Grade 3 locks common on production-built homes.
- Hinge reinforcement on outswing doors, since a door hinged the wrong way for its lock strength can sometimes be forced from the hinge side instead.
Insurance and Documentation
