- Video smart lock (smart deadbolt with built-in camera and doorbell)
This job replaced the keyed deadbolt on a residential front door with a eufy Security video smart lock. The old Taymor deadbolt came out, the eufy went in, and the existing lever handle stayed put. One unit on the door now covers the deadbolt, keypad, fingerprint entry, camera and doorbell button.
The Existing Door Hardware
The door started with a conventional setup: a Taymor keyed deadbolt in a bronze-tone finish, mounted above a lever handle in a similar finish. The Taymor name is visible on the cylinder face. Nothing in the before photo points to a problem with the old deadbolt. This was an upgrade, not a repair.
The paint is worn at the edge of the old deadbolt's trim ring, which is common on painted exterior doors where hardware has been taken on and off or adjusted.
The Video Smart Lock
The new hardware is a single eufy Security video smart lock, not a separate doorbell and deadbolt. Everything sits in one black exterior housing. From top to bottom:
- Fingerprint reader at the top of the unit
- Camera in the upper section
- Numeric keypad, 0 through 9, on the face
- Doorbell button at the bottom
eufy sells this category as a video smart lock: a smart deadbolt with a doorbell camera built into the outside half. The model number isn't visible in our photos, so we haven't listed one.
Remote unlocking, auto-lock, app alerts and visitor recordings all depend on how the lock is set up in the eufy app. They vary from one household to the next, so this write-up sticks to the hardware itself.
The Finished Installation
The biggest change is size. The eufy housing is much taller than the round deadbolt it replaced and covers the old deadbolt's footprint completely. On a panel door like this one, the housing has to fit on the flat stile between the raised panel moulding and the door edge. Here it does, with little room to spare. That's worth measuring before you buy: a wide exterior housing won't sit flat over moulding.
The original lever handle stays below the new lock, so the door now pairs a black smart lock with bronze-tone hardware. Plenty of homeowners keep their existing handle when they add a smart lock. If you'd rather the finishes match, we can suggest a lever to go with the new lock.
The doorbell button sits at the bottom of the unit, just above the handle, where a visitor's hand already goes.
